Nonlinear resampling for edge preserving moiré suppression
نویسندگان
چکیده
Printing applications using classical halftoning need to resample the original image to a screen lattice. This resampling can cause undesirable moiré artifacts in the screened image. Some printing techniques, e.g., gravure printing, are highly susceptible to moiré, not only because of the low resolution screen lattices they employ but also because the degree of freedom in constructing halftone dots is limited by the physical constraints of the engraving mechanism. Current resampling methods compute new samples by simple interpolation techniques which cannot prevent sampling moiré very well. Therefore precautions against moiré have to be made in the pre-press phase which is not practical and sometimes not feasible. A novel technique is presented to adaptively resample an image on the screen lattice using a local estimate of the risk of aliasing. The purpose is to suppress moiré while maintaining the sharpness of the image. Experimental results demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed approach.

متن کاملExploratory Data Analysis Using Radial Basis Function Latent Variable Models
Two developments of nonlinear latent variable models based on radial basis functions are discussed: in the first, the use of priors or constraints on allowable models is considered as a means of preserving data structure in low-dimensional representations for visualisation purposes. Also, a resampling approach is introduced which makes more effective use of the latent samples in evaluating the ...
متن کاملSuppression of moiré patterns in scanned halftone images
Moiré patterns often appear in the image obtained from scanning an image printed on a magazine or a newspaper. The patterns do not exist in the original printing but come from alias sampling of screened halftone pictures. A strategy to design a moiré suppression scanning procedure is proposed. Fourier analysis is presented for both the screening and the scanning processes, from which a formula ...
متن کاملBoundary detection by contextual non-linear smoothing
In this paper we present a two-step boundary detection algorithm. The "rst step is a nonlinear smoothing algorithm which is based on an orientation-sensitive probability measure. By incorporating geometrical constraints through the coupling structure, we obtain a robust nonlinear smoothing algorithm, where many nonlinear algorithms can be derived as special cases. Even when noise is substantial...
